Youth Media @ComputerClubhouse

All works below were created by youth at the Computer Clubhouse at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston – Charlestown Clubhouse (Charlestown, MA) during my tenure as the Technology Director from 2001-2005. (Videos coming soon!)
JUNIOR TECH TEAM

Junior Tech Team was a leadership group in the Clubhouse that met weekly and worked on group projects. Each season, the youth worked with adult mentors to choose and implement various projects, including a short promotional film for the Clubhouse. In 2004, they participated in the BGCA Digital Arts festival and wrote, filmed and edited their own movie about tolerance, called What Would You Do?

When spring 2005 rolled around, they decided to create another movie, this time of the horror genre – including script, posters, and a full premiere night for parents.

YOUNG ACTIVIST NETWORK

Young Activist Network is a program developed for over two years with PhD student Leo Burd from the MIT Media Lab to encourage youth-led social change projects using technology as a tool.

In 2003, the 8-12 year old members of the group learned about children’s rights in the fall and created rights poster and commercials.

In the spring, the youth planned an event to stop littering in their community, which they called the Trash Olympics, and created a digital story to present to the Club’s Advisory Board.

GIRLS ONLY

Both the Computer Clubhouse and the Boys & Girls Clubs are focused on providing unique programs to encourage young female members to explore science, math, and technology fields. In spring 2003, The Charlestown Clubhouse hosted a Girls Night with the South Boston Clubhouse where the female members interviewed each other and researched each other’s communities on the Web and created Powerpoint presentations and videos

We also had a weekly program in the spring of 2005 called Girls Club that brought together a group of girls that were fighting in other Club areas and had avoided technology programs in the past. One project was creating instructional slideshows in Windows Movie Maker, such as how to make gimp bracelets and apply makeup.

CROSS MEDIA PROJECTS

Hector, age 12, created a movie slideshow in Windows Moviemaker showcasing his work in Bryce, a 3D image creation program, as well as his originally mixed digital music, created in Acid.

CYBER SUMMIT

Cyber Summit is an annual BGCB event where members from all 5 BGCB Clubs and other Clubs and Computer Clubhouses come together for a two day sleepover conference of intense technology workshops and team challenges. The 2005 event was supported by the Verizon Foundation and fueled by over 40 volunteers from MIT Media Lab, ICCN, Harvard University, and local companies such as GraphicSoft and Cosmic Blobs. The theme of Tech Apprentice challenged members to create new product ideas and “sell” them at the Cyber Fair event at the end of the two days.

BEYOND 4 WALLS

Beyond 4 Walls was a STEM workshop for 6-12 year olds developed by Museum of Science Boston and ICCN. I continued to implement the program over the years to integrate multimedia into science and math educational programs.

One project involved members creating clay stop motion animations to promote clean water after they learned about sea pollution. Teen mentors also created a Powerpoint presentation at the end of the first year of the program.
